7th Heaven - Kansas City, MO
Des Moines, Iowa's Dose and Springfield, Missouri's Security Footage kicked off our hardcore double-header this past Friday evening. Dose played its first show this past October and their live tape of that performance remains the band's sole piece of recorded output. Their first visit to Kansas City -- the penultimate date of a week-long tour of the Midwest and Southwest -- drew a few dozen curious moshers and freaks out for some daylight-hours rocking. Though the band's overall sound is fairly standard hardcore punk with two-step mosh parts, the mischievous glint in the singer's eye and his rabid-dog vocal style provided a type of endearing, inimitable Midwestern flair that made the band a thrill to watch. Things got pretty rowdy for 7:30 P.M. in a record store basement.
This was one of the first out-of-town dates for Springfield's Security Footage, but at least a handful of attendees at this show were already acquainted with the members they shared with the band Side Eye. Security Footage had just released their first demo recordings the morning of the show and supplied fans with a sound that seemed to be equal parts punk rock and hardcore. They did the hard work of opening an evening that would include six bands total (Spy and friends played later at Farewell) and managed to get a few people dancing right around 6:30 P.M. -- salute.
