John Doe
A few dozen rock music fans gathered in downtown Overland Park Friday at noon for a solo performance from John Doe. Doe is an elder statesman of eighties punk rock, co-founding the band X with Exene Cervenka back in 1977. X is currently on a 40th anniversary tour and playing at Knuckleheads in Kansas City tonight, so Doe dropped in at Vinyl Renaissance to play a quick set on his own.

A majority of the 30 minute set included tracks from his solo albums. Doe's gruff vocals and passionate storytelling could impress even a casual fan of the folk rock genre. A charming anecdote about a time hanging out with Darby Crash, along with the two X songs he performed ("Burning House Of Love" and "The New World") pleased the die hard punks in the room.
