Allen Stone is big. Big blonde hair. Big glasses. Big presence. His
soulful falsetto thrilled the sold out crowd in the Knuckleheads garage on Wednesday night.
He’s obviously having the time of his life, riding a wave of popularity
after appearing as a guest mentor and collaborator on the most recent
season of American Idol. Many in the crowd knew the lyrics and sang
along to his sometimes introspective, most times joyous tunes. Stone
seemed genuinely thrilled with the crowd’s enthusiasm, expressing
gratitude and vowing to be back to visit his new friends.
Nick
Waterhouse started the night by opening a time capsule of music from an
era long before many of the young Allen Stone fans were born. Fifties and sixties R&B-inspired numbers had the crowd bobbing and nodding
along. His tight backing band came prepared with swelling organ riffs and plenty of smile-inducing sax.
