Judy & The Jerks
Mississippi punk rock rascals Judy & The Jerks arrived for their first invasion of Kansas City on Monday night. Their Snake Tank set consisted of zippy tracks about dumpster diving, parsimonious ghouls, and other off-the-wall subject matter. Covers of Buzzcocks' "I Don't Mind" and Die Kreuzen's "Think For Me" added some padding to the band's brief set and only sweetened the deal for a basement full of kids excited to see one of the hottest punk bands in the American South.

The Natural Man Band's new wave-meets-punk weirdo anthems sounded better than ever and so did the stage banter of vocalists Ian Teeple and Stephanie Eckermann. Their often-absurd, freewheeling on-mic antics at one point included eliciting a booing of clean air and water. Teeple even admitted that he was having more fun talking than playing, but it's hard to blame him.

Nitecrawlers' set was their second ever and vocalist Kayla Haubenschild's on-stage (or basement floor) energy levels had already multiplied since their first show. Anti-Seed's perpetually-vexed compositions gained momentum on a couple occasions during their short-lived performance, but guitar amp problems brought things to a premature halt.
