7th Heaven - Kansas City, MO

Death metal speed run complete. Minnesota's Sentenced 2 Die stopped in at 7th Heaven last week for a swift but fulfilling performance of material from its debut EP. The band arrived at the venue at 5 P.M., just as the opening act's set concluded, quickly loading in their amps, guitars, and drums, tuning and jumping straight into their sub-15-minute set. Despite a solid performance, only a dozen or two fans came out due to the gig's afternoon start time (the shop closes at 6 P.M. on Sundays) and last minute booking. Two push moshers clashed with a few hardcore dancers before everyone silently agreed to simply bang their heads. The music was over by 5:50, leaving the band 10 minutes to pack up and sell some merch. I later received word that they grabbed dinner, hopped back on the highway, and arrived in Tulsa around midnight. (Kansas City was its first show outside of Minneapolis.)

Lawrence hip-hop crew American Terrorist made its Kansas City debut just after 4:30 P.M. on this day. Five members and about a dozen friends and new fans leapt on and off the stage with urgency as the rappers unloaded anti-authoritarian bars over alt-rap beats that sometimes conjured a noisy, industrial feel. The group's hungry, DIY nature also came across loud and clear, so I don't suspect this is the last you'll be hearing of them.
