Herbie Hancock |
Jazz piano visionary Herbie Hancock masterminded a two hour spectacle performed on Saturday evening at the Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts. The nimble-fingered septuagenarian dazzled the room -- which smelled heavily of cologne and perfume -- with a mix of classic material and pieces from an upcoming album. Terrace Martin -- a key performer on Kendrick Lamar's last two albums -- played saxophone, keys, and vocoder in Hancock's band on Saturday night, and if the evening's performance is any hint of what's to come on the record, Hancock's first album in over seven years will be turning countless heads. Another member of this all-star band was guitarist Lionel Loueke. Loueke performed a solo early in the show and spent several minutes pulling otherworldly sounds from his instrument. The show's finale performance of "Head Hunters" favorite "
Chameleon" included Loueke battling a keytar-wielding Hancock and kindling a room full of smiles when this battle gradually grew almost inaudibly quiet.
