Words and Photos: A'Sean at The Rino

The Rino - North Kansas City, MO
Kansas City rapper A'Sean left his hometown to seek new experiences and further his music career in California last year. While visiting home a week ago, he treated friends and fans to a free show at The Rino that also included a pop-up from his SWAN clothing brand. The room was all smiles, and left and right, I found myself bumping into hip-hop scene friends and acquaintances I had rarely seen throughout the pandemic.
A'Sean's roughly hour-long performance included material from his debut full-length, One Big Happy Family, released just over three years prior, as well as recent singles, songs from his 2021 EPs, and unreleased tracks. The rapper casually conversed with fans and told charming backstories about some of the songs being performed, one of which involved a thunderstorm mushroom trip with rapper-producer Kye Colors who joined him on stage for this song (plus a performance of Kye's "Talk About It" and Ray Muney's "Wet"). The evening's other guest was singer/poet Adeta Marie who provided some impressive vocals on another unreleased A'Sean track.
